My latest for Remezcla: Maria y José

Ever heard of Ruidosón?
Meet and listen to María y José, the king of ruidosón & learn about the cultural phenenomenon coming out of Tijuana.
Below is an excerpt of my article published in Remezcla on3/11/13

Ruidosón is a cultural phenomenon that has taken over Tijuana and it can’t be mentioned without people associating it with Tony Gallardo aka Maria y José who has been at the forefront of this groundbreaking genre. Some of its creators go as far as describing it as a way of life rather than a genre. It picks up where Nortec left off.

Ruidosón is rooted in the dark sensibilities and noise of the modern city. It samples the sonic influences of yesteryear and melds it with the contemporary experiences and circumstances that many live in Tijuana. It is noisy, big bass beats and dance rhythms that were birthed by a new generation from the sinister bloodshed that has plagued the country for years. In a way, it could be said that ruidosón is a response to the violence and a way to cathartically release the frustration that many feel but don’t know how to express. It is a collision of cultures that explodes through the speakers rather than through weapons.

Meet Robert DeLong (Coachella 2013 Artist)

Billboard describes Robert Delong's story very well:

“Here’s a story you don’t hear much anymore in this YouTube sensation(!), social media era: Aspiring musician practices for hours daily and plays live shows until he’s spotted by a label exec, who signs him to a record deal. That’s what happened for Robert DeLong, the Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist whose striking debut album “Just Movement,” comes out on Feb. 5 through Glassnote Records. Trained as a drummer, DeLong has created a sound that reflects his dance music influences and an indie-rock sensibility that’s as club-ready as it is headphone-friendly. Its release is just days away, but stream the full LP exclusively on Billboard.com”

Listen To: Frikstailers new EP (ZZK Records)

ZZK Records stream the Guacha- EP by cumbia big bass duo Frikstailers

Frikstailers full length album En Son de Paz is set to be released February 26th. In the meantime enjoy their EP:

Frikstailers bio from the ZZK website:

Essentially, the music of the Frikstailers is all energy. 220 volts of pure dance energy. Both smart and shockingly fun, it is a project manned by the multi-rhythmic and sampling madmen Rafa Caivano (aka Ralf aka DJ Rafa Caivano) and Lisandro Sona (aka Sandro Lee, aka DJ Sandro de America).

This duo strives to make music without geographic or genre limitations. In their multilayered compositions they blend elements and icons from the collective pop unconsciousness, who are then dismembered into mutant sounds, which all morph into something totally different and new.All this mutating and splicing achieve a whole other aesthetic that is completely different than the original track.

The finished product is multifaceted and can change at the drop of a hat, combining dancehall, hip hop, baile funk, cumbia, dub, house, kuduro, electro and techno. Sometimes it is crazy and bizarre, borderline schizophrenic, yet they still retain the intelligence and craft of a beautifully produced electronic song.
